Chlorine is a powerful disinfectant that is added to most public water systems to remove bacteria that the water or its transport pipe systems may contain. The American Water Works Association credits the addition of chlorine to municipal water with increasing life expectancy by over 50% in the past century.
Some of the by-products created when chlorine reacts with the organic compounds found in water have been linked to cancer. According to the Canadian Cancer Society:
“Several chlorination by-products are possible causes of cancer. Studies have shown that trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), which are the most common chlorination by-products, can cause cancer in laboratory animals.”
Plus, chlorine does remove all contaminants. Dangerous bacteria (such as e-coli) are still found in chlorinated tap water.
On top of drinking chlorinated water, we are also bathing in it. When we shower, we are also inhaling and our skin is absorbing chemicals found in the water. While many homes have filtration systems for the drinking water, most ignore the water they are using to wash their bodies.
Chlorine strips the protective oils from skin and hair which can cause excess drying and wrinkling of skin while also causing the hair to be brittle and dry.
The most powerful way to remove harmful chemicals from our homes is through a whole house water filter system. While using an under sink filter will remove chemicals from your drinking water your body will still be exposed to chlorine and other chemicals.
