How Does Unfiltered Water Affect My Hair?

You may have heard of rumors that celebrities like Kim Basinger and Demi Moore wash their hair with bottled spring water to obtain the shine that most women dream about. While we didn’t really care to spend the time following up on celebrity rumors (especially ones on hair) we do realize that this is an important concern for many women and one that we know is directly correlated to water quality.

Basically what we are saying is that there is truth behind the rumors that filtered water can impact the sheen and luster of your hair. Why, you ask? The answer lies in the amount of chemicals found in municipal water sources.

What Chemicals are Found in Tap Water?

Beginning in the early 1900s, cities started permanently adding chlorine and various other chemicals to the public water supply to disinfect and “purify” the water. Regular exposure to chlorinated water can cause significant damage to our hair and skin as it strips away our body’s natural oils. The oil in hair is what protects it from over drying, which can cause cracking and splitting.

How Does Unfiltered Water Affect My Hair?

Colored or chemically treated hair, dry hair, and fine hair face the largest risk for chlorine damage. Individuals with these types of hair would benefit greatly from a water filtration system that removes chlorine and other harsh chemicals, should not wash their hair often, and should eat plenty of protein rich foods and vitamins.  Since chlorine removes natural oils from hair, individuals who have oily hair will have their natural oils stripped and their body tricked into thinking it needs to produce more oil to make up for the loss. This can result in very oily hair that is harder to manage.

What Can Be Done to Change This?

Our bodies absorb 100 times more chlorine and chemicals in a 10-minute shower than from drinking the same unfiltered tap water. Without a filtration system in place we are breathing in a significant amount of chlorine, which are not only cosmetically damaging but potentially dangerous to our health as well.

The best solution is to install a water filtration system at the point the water enters your home so that your shower water – as well as the water throughout your entire home – is filtered to remove harsh chemicals. A whole house water filtration system will also help your shampoos and conditioners work better on your hair, as the products are stripped of their abilities when paired with harsh chemicals.

As chlorine is a leading cause of fatigue, showering in a filtered, chlorine-free shower will result in higher energy levels and overall greater health. Because your hair would be able to preserve its own natural moisturizing oils, hair will become softer and healthier.
